Luca Bertolo
L’inizio ci assale
L’inizio ci assaleis the title chosen by Luca Bertolo for this exhibition, the first to be hosted by Palazzetto Marcello. These words are taken from a verse by Milo De Angelis, which Bertolo has already used as the title of some of his paintings: canvases, both blank and primed, that contain some element or a faint trace of the artist’s desire to begin a work.
It is a common belief that the countless beginnings that make up a life, just as the many beginnings in an artist’s journey, are for the most part small or grand acts of will, small or grand choices – whether courageous or conservative. It is customary to say that one must face the blank canvas, just as we say one faces the blank page. De Angelis’s words overturn this assumption. It is the beginning that acts, and we are its canvas.
All the works selected and created for this exhibition are representations of the beginning or of the ambiguous relationship that links the dimension of beginning to that of ending. BastoniThe evocation of certain ‘tribal’ characteristics, particularly in the Staff series – presented extensively for the first time – offers a further way of reflecting on the chain of beginnings and endings in our late-modern culture, and on how art in recent years has the potential to distance itself from the superficiality of current political tribalism and the aesthetic trivialisation of metropolitan cultures.
